THE EDUCATION STATION
“Promoting Accomplishments”
The mission of The Education Station, in collaboration with administrators, teachers, parents, and students is to provide a safe-working environment to promote students’ accomplishments as they experience educational and personal success.
The Education Station at Central High School, created in 2000, is a student center designed with the needs of the district’s students in mind. The Station is a part of LCSD#1’s plan to fulfill requirements for enrichment and remediation for the No Child Left Behind mandate. Services offered at The Education Station are mainly geared toward student needs; however, some teachers’ needs are also addressed. Students who have been absent may take classroom exams placed here by a teacher, enabling greater flexibility of make-up hours. Teachers may also send students to take a test or do another type of activity during class time if the need arises. A professional library for staff members is an integral part of the Station. The library incorporates current educational topics and practices to allow educators to build a knowledge base of strategies that ensures success for their students.
Students may do credit recovery, standard recovery, grade improvement, assignment recovery, or enrichment credit through the Education Station. Some core areas use the NovaNET program, a computer based learning system which offers a large on-line library of interactive instructional course ware. It provides students and instructors access to over 10,000 hours of self-paced instruction in more than 150 subject areas. NovaNET was developed by the University of Illinois’ Computer-based Education Research Laboratory and represents over 35 years of research and development. Business students have access after school hours in the Station to Corel Draw to complete homework assignments. Two music theory programs are also available for students to use to complete their music assignments. Academic tutoring by peers and/or teachers is offered during regular and extended-day hours. Computers and printers are available, allowing students to print their assignments for classes. Students working in study groups are welcomed. COMPASS, the entry exam used by colleges, is provided by LCCC through the Education Station for students in concurrent enrollment classes, so they may earn college credit as well as high school Carnegie units.
During extended hours for the Education Station, students from LCSD#1 are welcome. We promote accomplishments and strive for all students' successes.
